Cellar Doors
Please note some Cellar Doors may be closed due to the affects of Cyclone Gabrielle, please check before visiting.
Hawke’s Bay wine trials take in a vast variety of wineries, of which around 37, depending on the season you visit in, have cellar doors open to the public. These cellar doors are all unique and offer a chance to get to know the people behind the scenes as well as discover the diversity of styles and varieties produced in Hawke’s Bay.
Some of our cellar doors operate on a “By Appointment Only” basis. Others have standard opening hours whereby you can pop in. They do get busy sometimes, so it pays to call ahead and make a reservation, especially if you are a group of five or more. That way you can get the most out of your experience. Purchasing wine at a cellar door is a must do. You can take it with you or have it shipped home. The staff are always very helpful.

Wine Experiences
Hawke’s Bay is home to an outstanding wine tourism culture and offers a wide variety of experiences as well as regular food and wine festivals.
There is something for everybody in sunny Hawke’s Bay – pre-organised tasting flights (a wine flight is a selection of 4 or 5 wines to be tasted in order); tailored wine flights; wine flights can be self-guided or a knowledgeable character will take you through the wines; food and wine matching experiences; the opportunity to blend your own wine; VIP experiences accompanied by a sommelier, winemaker or even a Master of Wine; at certain times of the year there are opportunities to help in the vineyards at picking parties, or even see the wine making process in action.
Food options are offered at many of the cellar doors – options include full restaurant & bistros; cheese and charcuterie platters; wood fired pizzas; food trucks; build your own picnic or bring your own; café style cabinet food – all centred on the beautifully fresh, seasonal local produce. A long lunch is always the order of the day though, opening a fine bottle of Hawke’s bay wine to accompany it.

Getting Around
With more than 200 vineyards, 70+ wineries and 30+ cellar doors, the toughest decision you’ll have is where to start.
There are many options to transport yourselves between our cellar doors – self-drive, just make sure you nominate a sober driver!; hire a bike – whether electric or the old fashioned pedal power, our trails are organized into different circuits that take in several wineries en-route; book a winery tour and be driven around by a knowledgeable friendly local; you could walk between some that are grouped; or even charter a helicopter! The Wineries Ride was created to take in a small selection of Cellar Doors on an easy cycle route, with some topical storyboards along the way.
And if you want to be completely immersed in vineyard and winery life, then several of our members offer accommodation on their property that can be booked – from quaint vineyard cottages to luxurious lodges that you can bring a group of friends to.
