John Hancock, Hall of Fame Recipient 2025

In 2025, we celebrate a true pioneer of Hawke’s Bay winemaking – John Hancock, whose passion, vision and unwavering belief in the region’s potential have helped shape the course of New Zealand wine.

From humble beginnings on a remote sheep farm in South Australia, John’s story is one of curiosity, courage, and craftsmanship. What began with a schoolboy fascination for winemaking soon grew into a lifelong pursuit that would see him influence some of the country’s most celebrated wines.

After graduating from Roseworthy College in 1972, John honed his craft at Leo Buring before crossing the Tasman in 1979 to join Delegat in Auckland, where he helped redefine New Zealand table wine. By the early 1980s, his pioneering spirit found a home at Morton Estate, where his innovative barrel-fermented Chardonnays – including the now-legendary Morton Estate Black Label Chardonnay- captured national and international acclaim.

It was during this time that John discovered Hawke’s Bay’s unique potential. The fruit from the region’s Gimblett Gravels vineyards inspired him deeply, setting the stage for his next great chapter – Trinity Hill. Founded in 1993, Trinity Hill embodied his belief that Hawke’s Bay could stand proudly among the world’s great wine regions. Together with winemaker Warren Gibson, John crafted benchmark wines, including the iconic Hommage Syrah, that continue to define excellence to this day.

Beyond his winemaking achievements, John is known for his generous spirit, fierce independence, and unmistakable charm – a passionate ambassador for Hawke’s Bay and a tireless advocate for New Zealand wine on the global stage.

Whether on the road, in the cellar, or with a guitar in hand, John has always brought energy, authenticity, and conviction to everything he does. His legacy is one of innovation, integrity, and belief – belief in the land, the people, and the power of Hawke’s Bay to produce wines of true world-class calibre.

Today, we proudly welcome John Hancock into the Hawke’s Bay Wine Hall of Fame, recognising a lifetime of contribution to our region, our community, and our craft.

Here’s to the man, the maker, and the legacy that continues to inspire us all🥂
