After studying Horticultural Science at Lincoln University, Steve began his career in wine as a Research Viticulturist under the legendary Richard Smart at the Ministry of Agriculture in 1980.
Formerly the Technical Director at Te Mata Estate. One of New Zealand‘s leading winemakers and was a key figure in the development of Te Mata Estate’s culture of wine excellence.
In 2007 the Hawke’s Bay Grape Growers Association and Hawke’s Bay Winemakers Ltd merged becoming Hawke’s Bay Winegrowers Association.
Hawke’s Bay wine label Chateau Garage is a family affair for consultant viticulturist Ollie Powrie and family who make wine in their garage.
Through their craft Hawke’s Bay’s wine people have shaped the region’s identity and reputation as a Great Wine Capital of the World.
